Dear Joe,
Coincidence? While going through old videotapes I found and watched a documentary you made years ago for British television. Just 24 hours later I read of your death.
After first hearing you at Hammersmith in the late 70s, I was lucky enough to hear you several more times in Paris. I particularly loved the way you sometimes seemed to be thinking about something else entirely, but would suddenly play a preposterous line at impossible speed!
First Michael Brecker and then you. Why do we lose those whom we can least afford to lose? Rest in peace, Joe, but I think you might liven the peace up just a bit! |

J'ai appris qu'il nous avait quitté hier soir, et je suis dérouté de constater que la presse n'a pas rendu un grand hommage a ce merveilleux personnage qu'est Joe.
Mais cela n'enlèvera pas sa force créative qu'il nous a fait partager avec ses claviers et tous ses musiciens qu'il a dévoilé, j't'embrasse Joe on t'aime et on t'oubliera pas.

Joe has been (and will continue to be) a great influence and inspiration to me. His music has been the soundtrack to my life. I am very sad to hear that the great man has died but thank goodness we have so many recordings of his fantastic music and stunning playing. My heart goes out to his family who have lost 2 people in a very short time. So long joe z you'll never be forgotten your music will shine for future generations.
